Hu Jintao Meets with Macedonian President Crvenkovski

On the afternoon of September 15, 2005, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with his Macedonian counterpart Branko Crvenkovski in New York. The two heads of state exchanged views on further enhancing bilateral cooperation and other issues of common interest.

With regard to bilateral relations, Hu pointed out that though both counties are far away from each other geographically, the traditional friendship between the two peoples enjoys a solid foundation. Since the normalization of bilateral ties between both sides in 2001, the two countries have witnessed continuously strengthened mutual political trust, steadily enhanced mutually beneficial cooperation in the areas of economy, culture, education and health and more active regional and non-governmental exchanges. Both sides have shown mutual understanding and support in international affairs. China is satisfied with the sound momentum in the development of bilateral relations. Hu appreciated Crvenkovski for his consistent commitments to bilateral friendship and important contributions to the normalization of bilateral relations.

Hu said that there is no conflict of interest existing between both sides. To strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas conforms to the fundamental interest of the two countries and their people. China attaches great importance to developing friendly cooperative relations with Macedonia and would like to work with Macedonia to push the bilateral relations to a new level.

Crvenkovski thanked China for its precious support. He said that the Macedonian people hold very friendly feelings towards the Chinese people and to develop relations with China is a priority in Macedonia's foreign relations. His country would like to strengthen cooperation and communication with China in various areas including the UN and other multilateral fields. He reaffirmed that Macedonia adheres to the one-China policy and this position will not change.

Hu thanked Macedonia for observing the one-China policy and supporting China's grand cause of reunification. He indicated that China has always respected the development road chosen by the Macedonian people independently, as well as its internal and external policy formulated by the Macedonian government according to its national conditions and appreciates Macedonia for adopting the policy of good-neighborliness and friendship.
