Zhang Dejiang Holds Talks with His Macedonian Counterpart

On September 15, 2008, visiting Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang held talks with his Macedonian counterpart Zoran Stavrevski in Skopje.

The Chinese vice premier praised the traditional friendship between the two countries, saying that both sides have respected each other and treated each other as equals since the establishment of diplomatic ties 15 years ago. The two countries have witnessed smooth development in bilateral ties, with frequent high-level contacts, deepening political trust and rapidly growth of economic and trade cooperation. The two countries have also gradually expanded pragmatic cooperation on culture, science, technology and health and kept mutual support and close cooperation in international affairs, he added.

China is ready to work with Macedonia to further the bilateral relations based on the principle of mutual trust, mutual benefit and win-win results to push for sustained, healthy and in-depth development of bilateral ties, Zhang said. First, Zhang proposed that both sides deepen political dialogues and consultations, build political trust, understand and support each other and keep close cooperation in multilateral areas. Second, he suggested both countries enhance the scale and level of economic and trade cooperation, expand cooperation areas for mutual benefit and win-win results and push forward bilateral cooperation on communications, water conservancy, infrastructure construction and high and new technology, as well as collaboration between businesses of the two countries. Third, Zhang urged both sides to deepen exchanges and cooperation on culture, education, science and technology, health and sports and expand youth, women and people-to-people exchanges so as to consolidate the public basis of the ties.

Stavrevski congratulated China for hosting the Beijing Olympics successfully, saying it is the best Games in Olympic history. He also hailed China’s independent foreign policy of peace. "Macedonia and China have enjoyed stable relations in recent years, and the good relations have laid a sound base for economic and trade cooperation between the two sides," Stavrevski said. Stavrevski thanked China for its help and support for the Balkan state, reiterating Macedonia will stick to the one-China policy and strengthen cooperation with China in the economic and trade sector.

Following the talks, both sides attended a signing ceremony of several documents including an agreement on bilateral economic and technological cooperation.
