The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Slovenia established diplomatic relations on May 12, 1992. In October 1996, the two countries signed the "Joint Communiqué between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Slovenia".
From 2012 to 2019, the Chinese and Slovenian leaders had held bilateral meetings on numerous occasions such as the Meetings of Heads of Government of China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC). In February 2021, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Technology of Slovenia, Zdravko Počivalšek, attended the China-CEEC Summit hosted by President Xi Jinping. In May 2022, President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulatory messages with President of Slovenia Borut Pahor on the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. In January 2023, the two countries held vice-ministerial political consultation in Beijing. In August, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on European Affairs Wu Hongbo visited Slovenia and attended the Bled Strategic Forum. In November, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met with Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tanja Fajon during the UN General Assembly. In January 2024, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Wang Yong visited Slovenia. In April, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia Tanja Fajon visited China. In September, Wang Yi met with Tanja Fajon during the UN General Assembly.
China and Slovenia have established cooperation mechanisms such as the Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation and the Scientific and Technological Cooperation Committee. The two countries have signed several cooperation documents, including a memorandum of understanding to promote the Belt and Road Initiative.
In 2024, the bilateral trade volume between China and Slovenia reached US$6.6 billion, a decrease of 0.9% year-on-year. Slovenia actively participates in China-CEEC cooperation, leading the Forestry Cooperation Mechanism and the Winter Sports Cooperation Coordination Mechanism. In September 2024, China granted visa-free entry to Slovenian citizens holding ordinary passports.
