Spokesperson on recent tension in Kosovo

2000-11-15 14:15
The Chinese side expresses its deep worry about the recent tension in Kosovo. We condemn all violent actions that may bring new instability to Kosovo and urge relevant parties to exercise restraint to prevent the tension from escalating.

The Kosovo Question, caused by ethnic and religious conflicts in a region within Yugoslavia, is very complicated. The military action taken by the US-led Nato against the sovereign state of Yugoslavia seriously violated the UN Charter and norms governing international relations, set a very dangerous precedent of interfering in other country's internal affairs, and complicated the situation in the region. The recent situation in Kosovo once again shows that since the entering of KFOR and civilian agencies in Kosovo, the UN Resolution 1244 has not been effectively implemented. The security situation in Kosovo has not been markedly improved.

China's position on the Kosovo Question is very clear. We maintain that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia must be respected, the UN Resolution 1244 effectively implemented and the equal rights and interests of all ethnic groups in Kosovo fully respected. Only in this way can necessary conditions be created for the political settlement of the Kosovo Question.
