On March 9, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn at the latter's request.

Wang Yi said that Luxembourg is an important partner of China in the European Union. The mutual understanding, mutual support and mutual trust between China and Luxembourg have set an example of mutually beneficial cooperation between countries of different sizes. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, by sharing weal and woe and helping each other, China and Luxembourg have stood the test of the pandemic and deepened the friendship between the two peoples.

Wang Yi said that Luxembourg is an important bridge in the Belt and Road cooperation between China and the EU. The new development paradigm initiated by China will provide enterprises of other countries, including Luxembourg, with more development opportunities. He welcomes Luxembourg to participate in the internationalization of the yuan, and believes Luxembourg will continue to provide a fair and just business environment for Chinese enterprises. He hopes Luxembourg will continue to play an active role in promoting the development of China-EU relations, especially the early ratification and entry into force of the China-EU Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI).

Jean Asselborn briefed the pandemic situation in Luxembourg and said his country is ready to tighten high-level exchanges with China, deepen practical cooperation in such fields as aviation, freight, telecommunications, finance and culture, and play an active role in promoting the early ratification and entry into force of the CAI and the development of EU-China relations.

Wang Yi stated China's stance on the issues involving human rights, Hong Kong and Xinjiang, and emphasized that the purpose of the Communist Party of China is to serve the people whole-heartedly. We have accomplished the tremendous task of eliminating absolute poverty on schedule, which is our greatest achievement of promoting human rights. Some Western countries defamed China on Xinjiang-related issues. But all the rumors will not hold water in front of the truth. The electoral system of the Hong Kong SAR was improved to ensure steady and sustained implementation of the principles of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" and "a high degree of autonomy". He believes that Luxembourg and other European countries will uphold an unbiased and fair position, and work with China to respect each other, enhance the basis of mutual trust and maintain a healthy momentum of growth in China-EU relations.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
