On August 17, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with Prince Albert II of Monaco in Nanjing.

Xi Jinping warmly welcomed Albert II to come to China and attend the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games (YOG), and expressed his appreciation for him as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to actively promote the development of the international Olympic Movement and to support the Beijing Olympic Games and the Nanjing YOG.

Albert II said that China's hosting of the Nanjing YOG once again reflects China's attention to and respect for the international Olympic spirit. The opening ceremony last night was wonderful and the Chinese people are very warm. He believed that the Nanjing YOG will surely achieve a full success.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the China-Monaco relations are well-developed and the cooperation between the two sides is fruitful. China has always advocated that all countries, big or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, are equal members of the international community, and should respect each other, treat each other with equality and enjoy friendly co-existence. The Chinese side is willing to, together with the Monacan side, take the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between the two countries next year as an opportunity, to deepen political mutual trust, promote cooperation in various fields, facilitate personnel exchanges and enhance cultural exchanges and to continue to support each other in multilateral occasions so as to promote the China-Monaco relations to a new level.

Xi Jinping stressed that at present, China is in a period of rapid development of new industrialization, informatization, urbanization and agricultural modernization, and is committed to promoting scientific development and sustainable development. We pay much more attention to ecological civilization construction and scientific planning of urban development, which reflects that we respect nature, comply with nature and integrate the city into nature. Monaco has respected nature and history in its development process and formed unique concept of urban development. The two sides can strengthen exchanges and cooperation in green economy, environmental protection, financial services, sustainable development and other aspects.

Albert II said that both Monaco and China enjoy profound traditional friendship and the bilateral relations have been developing smoothly. They appreciate the Chinese path of sustainable development, and are willing to strengthen cooperation with the Chinese side in telecommunications, eco-environmental protection, climate change and other fields, promote tourism and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and create conditions to allow more Monacan young people to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture so as to enhance mutual understanding and friendly affection between the two peoples.
