Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan on the afternoon of May 10 lodged a serious representation with James Sasser, U.S. ambassador to China, for the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia by US-led NATO.

Tang said that U.S.-led NATO wantonly used missiles to attack the Chinese Embassy in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which caused many casualties and left the embassy building devastated. "This is an open defiance and serious destruction of the U.N. Charter and norms of international relations, and a gross encroachment on Chinese sovereignty." The Chinese government has already issued a solemn statement on the matter, in which it expressed utmost indignation and extreme condemnation of the brutal act, and presented the strongest protest to U.S.-led NATO. The Chinese government has demanded that U.S.-led NATO bear all responsibilities for this incident, and the Chinese side will continue to pay close attention to the development of the matter. On behalf of the Chinese government, Tang issued the following solemn requests to U.S.-led NATO:

1. To make an open and official apology to the Chinese government, the Chinese people, and relatives of the Chinese victims;

2. To carry out a complete and thorough investigation of the NATO missile attack on China's embassy in Yugoslavia;

3.To promptly publicize the detailed results of the investigation;

4. To severely punish those responsible for the attack.

Tang said "it must be clearly stated that the military operation of U.S.-led NATO against Yugoslavia has brought abysmal disaster to people in the region." He stressed "U.S.-led NATO must stop military operation against Yugoslavia immediately so as to bring the Kosovo issue back to the track of political solution as soon as possible,"

The Chinese side also presented an official note on the matter to the U.S. side.
