The Question of Falun Gong

2000-11-15 14:16
On October 27,1999, Mr. Rubin, the spokesman of the US State Department, distorted facts and made groundless remarks on Chinese Government's handling of the question of " Falun Gong" at the press conference of the US State Department. On October 28, the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry of China expressed strong displeasure over that and pointed out that the Chines government is firmly opposed to any act of making by making irresponsible remarks on this question and interfering into China's internal affairs. On November 18, just before the adjournment of the House of the Representatives of the US Congress and with the presence of only seven or eight Congressmen, the House of the Representatives passed the joint resolution of the Senate and the House of the Representatives put forward by the anti-China Representative, Mr. Smith, making wanton remarks on the banning of "Falun Gong" by the Chines government and urging the US government to exert pressure on the Chinese government. On November 18, the Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry refuted the resolution in answering questions raised by correspondents. On December 6, U.S. President Clinton indicated at the White House, in his speech of commemorating the 51st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it's worrisome for the Chinese Government to ban the Falun gong. On December 7, Vice Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi made solemn representation with the Charge d'Affaires of the US Embassy in China, Mr. McCahill on that.

On May 3, 2000, the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry of China, with reference to the annual report of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, pointed out that the China-related part wantonly interfered in China's internal affairs by using the Falun Gong issue, and that the Chinese Government and the Chinese people thereby expressed strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to it. On 6 September, the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said it was an egregiously erroneous act that the International Religious Freedom Report for 2000 issued by the US State Department made groundless accusation against the Chinese Government's handling of the Falun Gong in accordance with law.
