The Question of Human Rights

2000-11-15 14:16
On January 11, 2000, the spokesman of the U.S. Department of State announced that the United States would sponsor a China resolution at the 56th Session of United Nations Commission on Human Rights in March this year. The Chinese side lodged solemn representation with the US side on that. On February 26, the US State Department launched the 1999 Human Right Report once again distorting the facts and attacking China on the status of human rights in China. In response, the Chines side lodged solemn representation with the US side, and the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry made a statement of refutation.

On 18 April, at the 56th Session of the UN Commission on Human Rights , the United States tabled a draft resolution on the so-called "Human Right Situation in China" in an attempt to interfere in China's internal affairs. China made a motion to take no action on the U.S.-sponsored draft resolution. The Commission passed China's motion to take no action on the draft resolution with 22 votes in favour,18 votes in opposition and 12 votes of abstention. This is the ninth time since 1990 that China defeated the anti-China draft resolution sponsored by some Western countries.
