On October 21, local time, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met respectively with Bahamian Governor-General Arthur Alexander Foulkes and Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham in Nassau.

Yang appreciated the achievements of economic and social development in the Bahamas and spoke highly of bilateral friendly cooperative relations, saying that China adheres to the win-win policy of peaceful development and holds that countries, regardless of size, strength and wealth, are equal. China attaches great importance to developing China-Bahamas friendly cooperative relations and is ready to maintain high-level exchanges, enhance understanding and deepen mutual trust. He urged both sides to deepen pragmatic cooperation and continue to strengthen and explore cooperation on infrastructure, finance, shipping, aviation, tourism and other areas. China will encourage and support competent and reputable Chinese enterprises to invest in the Bahamas. Both sides should also enrich cultural exchanges and further strengthen cultural and educational cooperation. Both sides should strengthen communication and coordination on climate change, regional security and other international issues, safeguard legitimate rights and interests of the two countries and other developing countries and promote world peace and security. China appreciates the Bahamas' adherence to the one-China policy.

Yang said China attaches importance to relations with the Caribbean countries and is willing to work with the Caribbean countries including the Bahamas to implement the outcomes of the Third China - Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum, further enhance China-Caribbean pragmatic cooperation and promote the comprehensive development of bilateral relations. He hopes that the Bahamas will continue to play an active role in this regard.

Foulkes said the deepening friendship between the Bahamas and China has brought tangible benefits to both peoples and his country thanked for China’s assistance. Although the Bahamas is a small country, the two countries have continuously enhanced their cooperation in investment, tourism, culture and other fields which is in particular helpful for the Bahamas to maintain its economic vitality in the context of the world economic downturn. With China's rapid development and rising international influence, the developing countries including small nations look forward to continuing to get support from China.

Ingraham said bilateral relations have enjoyed sound development and the two sides have cooperated smoothly in economy, trade, finance, shipping, education and other areas and maintained communication on international issues such as climate change. The Bahamas would like to make joint efforts with China to push forward bilateral ties.

On the same day, Yang Jiechi also attended a welcoming luncheon hosted by Bahamian acting Foreign Minster Tommy Turnquest.
