President Xi Jinping Arrives Port of Spain for State Visit to Trinidad and Tobago

On May 31 local time, President Xi Jinping arrived in Port of Spain, starting his state visit to Trinidad and Tobago.

At about 7: 10 p.m. local time, Xi Jinping's special plane arrived at Port of Spain Piarco International Airport. Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan were warmly greeted by Trinidad and Tobago President Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona and his wife, and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Carmona held a grand welcome ceremony at the airport. Xi Jinping mounted to the inspection platform. The military band played the national anthems of the two countries and fired 21 gun salutes. Xi Jinping, accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff of Trinidad and Tobago, inspected the guards of honour.

The Chief Justice, President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, cabinet ministers and leaders of major political parties of Trinidad and Tobago greeted at the airport.

The Trinidad and Tobago National Steel Orchestra performed on the site, welcoming Chinese guests with cheerful music. Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan, accompanied by President Carmona and his wife and Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar, walked up to the performers to enjoy their wonderful performances. Xi Jinping as well beat the steel pans together with the players in a friendly and warm atmosphere. The steel pan music is a unique way of performance originated from Trinidad and Tobago.

Xi Jinping extended sincere greetings and best wishes to the people of Trinidad and Tobago on behalf of the Chinese people. Xi Jinping said that Trinidad and Tobago is a country with great influence in the Caribbean Region. To consolidate and develop China-Trinidad and Tobago relations will benefit the two peoples, and also help to promote solidarity and cooperation between China and Caribbean countries, as well as the developing countries as a whole. I am looking forward to exchanging views on bilateral relations as well as international and regional issues of mutual interest with President Carmona, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar and other leaders of Trinidad and Tobago. During the visit, I will also hold meetings with leaders of some other Caribbean countries, to discuss cooperation plans and to upgrade China-Caribbean friendly cooperative relationship to a new level.

The whole delegation, including Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu and Yang Jiechi arrived by the same plane.

H.E. Huang Xingyuan, Chinese Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, as well greeted at the airport.

Following the visit to Trinidad and Tobago, Xi Jinping will pay visits to Costa Rica and Mexico and hold the China-US presidential meeting in the US.
