President Xi Jinping Meets with Trinidad and Tobago Senate President Timothy Hamel-Smith and House Speaker Wade Mark

On June 1, 2013, President Xi Jinping met with Timothy Hamel-Smith, President of the Senate, and Wade Mark, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Trinidad and Tobago, in Port of Spain.

Xi Jinping spoke highly of the achievements of Trinidad and Tobago in its economic, social and ecological development. Xi Jinping said, t during the visit, I reached new important consensus with leaders of Trinidad and Tobago on strengthening bilateral cooperation. We hope that the legislative bodies of the two countries can maintain exchanges, and learn from each other on legislation, supervision and governance, so as to enhance mutual understanding, to consolidate public support for the bilateral relationship and to promote friendly cooperation between the two countries.

Hamel-Smith and Mark recalled with pleasure their visits to China last year, saying that the visit helped them better understand China's development path and ideas for governamce. Trinidad and Tobago supports the Chinese people in realizing their Chinese dream. The parliament of Trinidad and Tobago hopes to have regular exchange of visits with the National People's Congress of China to make positive contributions to promoting the relations between the two countries.

Later in the afternoon, Xi Jinping, accompanied by Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, attended the commencement ceremony of Children's Hospital Complex, which will be built by Chinese company in the central city of Couva. Xi Jinping unveiled the commemorative stone of the project together with Persad-Bissessar and extended his sincere greetings to the construction workers from both countries. Xi Jinping encouraged the Chinese workers to complete the project on time and with high quality to make it a new symbol of friendship between China and Trinidad and Tobago.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu and Yang Jiechi were present at the above activities.

On the same day, President Xi Jinping's wife Peng Liyuan, accompanied by Mrs. Carmona, visited the Trinidad and Tobago Association for Retarded Children (TTARC). Peng Liyuan listened to the executives of the Association for an introduction and visited the children in the classroom. At the event hall, Peng Liyuan watched singing and dancing performances by the children and presented toys to them. She noted that children need care and love, the special ones need even more. China and Trinidad and Tobago may start exchanges for the cause of charity from now on.
