On June 20, 2014, President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulatory messages with President Anthony Carmona of Trinidad and Tobago to warmly celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Trinidad and Tobago.

In his congratulatory message, Xi Jinping said that I attach great importance to the development of bilateral relations between China and Trinidad and Tobago. Since my visit to Trinidad and Tobago last year and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar's visit to China this year, bilateral cooperation in various fields has made important progress, pushing the bilateral relations to an unprecedented level and presenting broader prospect for development. I am ready to work with you to promote China and Trinidad and Tobago to continue to deepen mutual respect and mutual trust in politics, expand mutually beneficial cooperation in economy and trade, and learn from each other in people-to-people and cultural engagement, so as to better benefit the two countries and two peoples.

In his congratulatory message, Carmona expressed that friendly exchanges between Trinidad and Tobago and China have a history of more than 200 years. Both countries belong to the Third World and enjoy a fraternal relationship, which lay the foundation for the two countries to officially establish diplomatic relations 40 years ago. Under the guidance of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, Trinidad and Tobago and China have set up and advanced relations featuring mutual benefit and win-win results over the past 40 years, which has brought benefits to the two countries and two peoples. I'm willing to make joint efforts with President Xi Jinping to lift Trinidad and Tobago-China relations to a new high.
