Vice Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi Pays a Successful Visit to Dominica

At the invitation of the Dominican government, Vice Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi paid an official visit to Dominica from June 1 to 2, 2006. On the afternoon of June 1, Vice Foreign Minister Yang held talks with Dominican Foreign Minister Charles Savrin and both sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and issues of common interest. On the evening of the same day, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit hosted a banquet for the Chinese delegation.

On June 2, Yang held official talks with Prime Minister Skerrit and all cabinet ministers. Vice Foreign Minister Yang said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to developing relations with Dominica. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, bilateral friendly cooperative relations have been developing rapidly and both sides have deepened cooperation in the areas of politics, economy & trade, education, culture, tourism and human resources. China will work with the Dominican government and people to further advance bilateral relations. Yang appreciated Dominica for resolutely pursuing the one-China policy and opposing the separatist activities aiming at "Taiwan independence".

Prime Minister Skerrit noted that over the past two years, China has offered sincere assistance for Dominica's economic and social development and he extended cordial thanks for the Chinese government and people on behalf of the Dominican government. Facts have proven that the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Dominica conforms to the fundamental interest of both countries. Dominica will continue to adhere to the one-China principle and support China's grand cause of peaceful reunification. Following the meeting, Vice Foreign Minister Yang signed with Dominican Minister of Engineering the agreement on economic and technological cooperation between both sides.

On June 2, Yang paid a courtesy call on Dominican President Nicholas Liverpool. He also inspected the Chinese Embassy and the construction site of Windsor Park Stadium in Dominica assisted by China, and expressed sincere solicitude to the personnel of the Embassy, as well as the technicians and workers at the stadium. Chinese Ambassador to Dominica Ye Dabo accompanied Yang and his delegation throughout the whole journey. Ambassador Ye Dabo, Permanent Secretary of the Dominican Foreign Ministry and other officials, as well as representatives from Chinese citizens residing in Dominica and overseas Chinese living there welcomed Yang and his delegation and saw them off upon their arrival and departure.
