On July 8, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao of the State Council held talks in the Great Hall of the People with Grenada's Prime Minister Keith Mitchell. The two sides exchanged views on the development of China-Grenada friendly cooperative relations.

Wen said China and Grenada have strengthened their cooperation and consolidated their relations since the resumption of diplomatic ties between the two countries in January this year. Facts have proven that developing mutually beneficial cooperation on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence between China and Grenada conforms to the fundamental and long-term interests of both countries. China attaches importance to its relationship with Grenada, and appreciates Grenada's hope to develop bilateral ties. He believed China-Grenada relations can surely score greater development through joint efforts.

Wen pointed out as the two countries are separated far away geographically and bilateral relations just get restarted, China and Grenada need to work out a comprehensive plan for the future. To further consolidate and develop bilateral relations, China and Grenada should strengthen exchanges between governments, parliaments and political parties to boost political mutual trust, actively promote non-governmental exchanges and expand cooperation in such fields as culture, education and tourism so as to lay a foundation at the grassroots level for the friendship of the two countries, and enhance their coordination and collaboration in international affairs in a bid to spur South-South cooperation and boost common development.

When talking about China-Grenada economic and trade relations, Wen said economic and trade relations constitute an important part of bilateral relationship. Despite some growth, the scale of bilateral economic and trade cooperation is still quite limited. However, the two economies are complimentary and there is potential for cooperation. China will implement the Action Plan of Economic and Trade Cooperation adopted at the 2005 Ministerial Meeting for China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation, push forward China-Grenada cooperation in trade, investment, finance, agriculture, fishery and other areas, carry out identified key projects, and continue to provide support and help for Grenada's economic and social development within its utmost capacity.

Wen expressed appreciations to Grenada for reiterating its adherence to the one-China policy.

Mitchell agreed with Wen on his proposals on the further consolidation and development of bilateral relations. He said China is a country of important influence in the international community, and developing Grenada-China relations is conducive to the development of Grenada's economic and social growth and will bring benefits to the people of Grenada. Grenada is confident about the prospect of developing friendly and cooperative ties with China, hoping that the two sides could expand cooperation in trade, investment, tourism and other areas. Mitchell reiterated that Grenada will continue to pursue the one-China policy.

Following the talks, the two prime ministers jointly attended the signing ceremony of bilateral cooperative documents.

Prior to the talks, Wen held a welcoming ceremony for Mitchell at the square outside the East Gate of the Great Hall of the People. Vice Chairman Du Yijin of the Central Committee of Zhigong Party and Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing were present at the welcoming ceremony.
