On the afternoon of December 6, 2006, Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), held talks with visiting Grenadian President of the Senate Kenny Lalsingh and Speaker of the House of Representatives Lawrence Joseph in the Great Hall of the People.

Grenada is an island country in Caribbean Sea. Wu said in recent years the Grenadian people have overcome natural disasters and many other difficulties and have been committed to building their homeland with sound results achieved in tourism, agriculture and other areas, for which the Chinese side expresses sincere congratulations. Wu said China had attached importance to the relations with Grenada. Since the resumption of diplomatic ties in 2005, the two countries have witnessed frequent high-level contacts, increasing political trust, gratifying momentum of trade growth, deepening humanities exchanges and sound cooperation in multilateral areas. As both China and Grenada are developing countries and facing the task of improving economy and people's lives, strengthening unity and cooperation is in conformity with the fundamental and long-term interest of the two countries and the peoples, Wu said. China is ready to work with Grenada to strengthen friendly cooperation in all areas and push the ties to a higher level.

Wu pointed out that the Taiwan question concerns China's core interest and the feelings of 1.3 billion Chinese people. Wu expressed appreciation for the adherence of Grenada to the one-China stance and its support to China's reunification cause, saying this cemented the political foundation for Sino-Grenadian relations.

When talking about inter-parliamentary relations, Wu said the state-to-state relations couldn't develop without parliamentary cooperation. "The visit by Grenadian parliamentary leaders launched a new beginning for parliamentary exchanges and was significant," said Wu. He said the NPC is ready to strengthen cooperation with the Grenadian parliament to learn from each other on country governance, strengthening democracy and legal system, and inject new vitality into the development of Sino-Grenada relations.

The Grenadian parliamentary leaders expressed admiration for China's enormous achievements in economic and social development and reaffirmed adherence to the one-China policy. They vowed the Grenadian parliament will play a more positive role in creating a better future for Grenadian-Sino relations.
