Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Xue Bing Attends the Opening Ceremony of the 14th Ordinary Session of the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government

On June 12, 2023, the 14th Ordinary Session of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Assembly of Heads of State and Government was held in Djibouti. The Presidents of Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia and South Sudan, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, the Vice Chairman of Sudan's Sovereign Council, the Foreign Ministers of Eritrea and Uganda, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission attended the meeting. The Special Envoys for the Horn of Africa of China, the United States, Italy, Japan, the European Union and the UN Secretary-General attended and addressed the opening ceremony upon invitation. Chinese Ambassador to Djibouti Hu Bin was present.

In his speech, Special Envoy Xue Bing extend congratulations on the convening of the meeting, expressed appreciation of IGAD's important contributions to promoting regional peace and stability, welcomed IGAD's active participation in the "Outlook on Peace and Development in the Horn of Africa", and noted that China is ready to continuously support countries in the region in drought relief, peacekeeping and developing the economy.

During the meeting, the parties congratulated Eritrea on its re-admission to IGAD and discussed the situation in Sudan as well as responses to extreme climate and food security. The meeting decided that Djibouti takes over from Sudan as the new rotating president of IGAD.
