On April 16, 2017, State Councilor Yang Jiechi held telephone talks with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson of the US at request.

Yang Jiechi noted that not long ago, President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump held a successful meeting at Mar-a-Lago, which sets a constructive tone, charts the course and makes the plan for the development of China-US relations. A few days ago, the two heads of state also held a fairly sound telephone talk. For the next stage, both sides should make joint efforts to, in accordance with the spirit and consensus reached by the two heads of state during their meeting and telephone talks, enhance high-level exchanges and dialogues, expand the fields of mutually beneficial cooperation, manage and control differences on the basis of mutual respect, and push China-US relations for greater development, so as to better benefit the two peoples as well as people of the world.

Rex Tillerson expressed that the Mar-a-Lago meeting and telephone talks between heads of state of the US and China were positive and fruitful. The US looks forward to, together with China, strengthening communication, making good preparation for high-level exchanges and dialogues in the next stage, and jointly advancing the constant development of bilateral relations.

The two sides also exchanged views on the current Korean Peninsula situation.
