On December 23, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was in Siem Reap of Cambodia for the second Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, met with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin of Myanmar.

Wang Yi said that after the change of administration in Myanmar  in 2016, bilateral relations have realized the smooth transition and present a positive and sound momentum. The new government of Myanmar cherishes the Paukphaw friendship between the two peoples and upholds positive and friendly policies towards China, which China fully affirms. China is willing to work with Myanmar to well plan high-level exchanges in 2017 and push forward bilateral cooperation in various fields based on Myanmar's development needs. It is hoped that Myanmar could carry forward the spirit of Panlong Conference and realize national reconciliation and stability at an early date. China respects Myanmar's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and is ready to continue to play a constructive role in Myanmar's peace process.

U Kyaw Tin said that Myanmar always views its relations with China from a strategic perspective. The first Foreign Minister the new government of Myanmar received was the Chinese Foreign Minister. The first non-ASEAN country State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi chose to visit was China. The Myanmar side stands ready to further intensify exchanges with China, tighten the friendship between both peoples, and deepen bilateral practical cooperation so as to benefit more common people of Myanmar. Myanmar appreciates China's constructive role in Myanmar's peace process and speaks highly of Myanmar-China 2+2 High-Level Consultations between Foreign Ministries and Defense Ministries held last month, hoping that this mechanism could play a greater role.

Wang Yi expressed that the LMC is a new type of sub-regional cooperation established by the six countries in the whole watershed in a spontaneous and voluntary way. Pursuing the principles of wide consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, the LMC is committed to better benefiting the people of all countries. Meanwhile, the LMC follows the purposes of the UN Charter, abides by the basic standard governing international relations and completely conforms to the common interests of sub-regional countries. The Chinese side is willing to, together with Myanmar and all parties, usher the LMC into rapid and efficient development.

U Kyaw Tin noted that current international and regional economies are undergoing sluggish recovery. It is of great significance for sub-regional countries to reinforce the LMC. Actively participating in the LMC goes with Myanmar's national interests and could bring tangible benefits to the Myanmar people. The Myanmar side congratulates on the success of the Foreign Ministers' Meeting this time, appreciates China's crucial role as the co-chair and hopes to continue to beef up cooperation with China within the LMC framework.
