China and Fiji

In 2013, friendly relations and cooperation between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Fiji continued to grow.

The two sides had frequent high-level exchanges. In May, Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama attended the Second China (Beijing) International Fair for Trade in Services and paid a working visit to China. A number of senior Chinese officials visited Fiji, including Minister of Culture Cai Wu, Deputy Chief of General Staff of PLA Lieutenant General Wang Guanzhong, Director-General of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Ministry of National Defense Qian Lihua and Vice Minister of the CPC International Department Liu Jieyi. Li Qiangmin, Special Envoy for the China-Pacific Islands Forum Dialogue attended the G77 High Level Panel of Eminent Personalities and the Pacific Islands Development Forum in Fiji. In November, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forests Inia Seruiratu attended the Second China-Pacific Islands Economic Development and Cooperation Forum held in China, and met with Vice Premier Wang Yang. In the same month, Minister for Defense Joketani Cokanasiga visited China.

Cooperation in trade, law enforcement and people-to-people exchanges made new headway. The China-assisted Sea Wall and other projects were completed smoothly. The Navua Hospital, Somosomo Mini Hydropower Station, Mushroom Project, affordable housing, highway upgrade and other projects were well underway. The Fiji police provided assistance to the Chinese side in arresting a number of Chinese fugitives. A friendship delegation and a medical team from Guangdong Province visited Fiji. An MOU on cultural cooperation was signed by the two sides. An art troupe from Chongqing Municipality toured Fiji.
