On April 6, 2004, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met with Joaquim Alberto Chissano, President of Mozambique, at the Great Hall of the People.
Premier Wen positively appraised China-Mozambique relations. He said relations between the two countries enjoy a solid foundation. The Chinese people have rendered firm support to the people of Mozambique as early as in their fight for emancipation and independence. After the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries have forged friendly relations of cooperation featuring mutual political respect and economic cooperation based on equality and mutual benefit, by supporting and helping each other. Wen indicated that the Chinese government would implement the consensus reached by heads of state of the two countries on development of bilateral relations by expanding cooperation in such areas as economy, trade, agriculture and human resources development in an effort to push forward the continuous development of China-Mozambique relations.
During the meeting, Wen also expressed appreciation for the adherence to the one-China policy by the Mozambique government and exchanged views with President Chissano on issues related to China-Africa cooperation.
Chissano said that Mozambique-China cooperation is part of South-South cooperation. The two countries have made important headways in cooperation in all fields including economy and trade. Mozambique hopes to work together with China in exploring new fields and means of expanding economic and trade cooperation and enhance mutually beneficial cooperation in investment, agriculture and mining.
