On the afternoon of August 23, 2023 local time, President Xi Jinping met with Senegalese President Macky Sall on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg.

Xi Jinping noted that Senegal is an important cooperative partner of China in Africa. With joint efforts of both sides in recent years, China and Senegal have witnessed increasingly deepening political mutual trust and fruitful outcomes in bilateral cooperation in various fields. China firmly supports Senegal's endeavors in safeguarding national stability and development, and stands ready to work with Senegal to strengthen mutual support, deepen bilateral cooperation in such areas as industry, agriculture, infrastructure development, and human resources development, jointly safeguard legitimate development rights and interests, and promote greater development of the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries.

Xi Jinping stressed that currently, the international situation is undergoing profound and complex changes, and that China and Africa need more than ever to strengthen solidarity and cooperation. China supports the African Union (AU) in joining the Group of 20 (G20), and will share with African brothers its development experience and opportunities, and work to build a China-Africa community with a shared future in the new era by continuously upholding the principles of sincerity, real results, amity and good faith, and that of pursuing the greater good and shared interests. As co-chairs of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), China and Senegal have supported and cooperated with each other and successfully held a series of important events, including the Extraordinary China-Africa Summit on Solidarity against COVID-19. China will continue to strengthen communication and coordination with Senegal, work for the implementation of the nine programs of the FOCAC, and make new contributions to consolidating solidarity and cooperation between China and Africa.

Macky Sall said that Senegal and China are high-quality comprehensive strategic partners, and that President Xi Jinping is a great friend of Africa and Senegal. The two sides, in the spirit of sincerity and friendship, have carried out mutually beneficial cooperation in a wide range of areas such as infrastructure, industry, agriculture and education. Senegal firmly pursues the one-China policy, appreciates China's foreign policy of peace, and hopes to deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation with China. The vigorous Africa-China cooperation meets the development needs of Africa and has been implemented efficiently, which has strongly supported the economic and social development of African countries. He thanked China for taking the lead in publicly supporting the AU in joining the G20. As the co-chair of the FOCAC, Senegal is ready to continue to keep close communication and cooperation with China to promote further development of Africa-China relations.
