Adopting Protectionism Means Shutting Door into China

2018-03-31 14:55

On March 30, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Business Summit in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Wang Yi noted that this year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up, and is an important year to inherit the past and usher the future. For the past 40 years, the development achievements of China have been relying on reform and opening-up, and the higher-quality development of China in the future will still depend on reform and opening-up. Reform and opening-up is China's set policy, which will not be changed or be affected by any other external factors. The reform and opening-up conforms to the interests of the Chinese people, and will also benefit various countries. Taking the 40th anniversary of reform and opening-up as an opportunity and putting emphasis on the joint construction of the "Belt and Road", China will pursue not only "bringing in" but also "going global", so as to build an all-round pattern of opening-up featuring links running eastward and westward, across land and over sea. China will roll out a series of measures to further the opening-up, thus providing a more favorable and more relaxed investment environment for foreign enterprises.

Wang Yi stressed that opening should work both ways. China opens itself to other countries and also hopes others will be open to China. Frictions and disputes in international trade are nothing surprising. What is important is to work for win-win solutions through equal consultation in line with related laws and rules. Those who choose unilateralism or trade protectionism, an approach against the trend of the history, will find themselves going nowhere and see their own interests undermined. Wang Yi said that China is willing to share the development opportunities with all the other countries. However, adopting protectionism means shutting the door into China and will definitely harm one's own interests. This will be proved by time as well as by facts.
