Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming Meets Officials of the British Foreign Office

On 30 March 2023, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming had a meeting with Permanent Under-Secretary Philip Barton and Director for Northeast Asia and China Dan Chugg of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office during his visit to the United Kingdom. The two sides exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula, China-UK relations, and regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Liu Xiaoming elaborated on China's principles and position on the Korean Peninsula issue. He underscored that the parties concerned should squarely recognize the crux of the problem, keep to the direction of political settlement, follow the dual-track approach and the principle of seeking phased and synchronized progress, and work to resolve each other's concerns, in particular the legitimate concerns of the DPRK, in a balanced manner through meaningful dialogue. Liu affirmed China's commitment to growing mutually beneficial cooperation on the basis of mutual respect and  expressed hope for the UK to work together with China to promote sound and steady growth of their bilateral relations.

The British officials recognized China's important role in addressing the Korean Peninsula issue and expressed willingness to keep communication with the Chinese side on relevant matters. They affirmed the UK's readiness to work with China to advance steady development of bilateral ties, enhance cooperation in various fields, and jointly respond to global challenges.
