From December 13 to 16, 2016, the negotiations on Treaty Between China and Kenya on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters and China-Kenya Extradition Treaty were held in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. The Chinese delegation consisted of principal officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Justice and other relevant ministries. Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Foreign Ministry Xu Hong led the delegation. Consisting of representatives from the State Law Office and Department of Justice, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Court, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and other relevant departments of Kenya, the Kenyan delegation was led by Deputy Solicitor General Muthoni Kimani.

After four days of hard negotiations, both sides reached an agreement on all the terms of the two draft treaties, and the two heads of delegation signed the minutes of the meeting and treaty texts.

During his stay in Kenya, the head of the Chinese delegation Xu Hong paid a courtesy call on Attorney General Githu Muigai of Kenya. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on relevant issues concerning bilateral legal cooperation. Charge d'affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in Kenya Yao Ming was present.
