1、Bilateral Political relations
China established diplomatic relations with Mauritius on April 15, 1972. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries has developed smoothly.
The main Chinese visitors to Mauritius: Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi (January 2016), and President Xi Jinping (transit and friendly visit in July 2018).
The main Mauritius visitors to China: President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim ( January2016), Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth (September 2018), Speaker of Parliament Shanti Bai Hanoomanjee (February 2018), Vice President Marie Cyril Eddy Boissézon (September 2024).
China and Mauritius have a strategic partnership.
2、Practical Economic And Trade Cooperation
China and Mauritius have signed Free Trade Agreement. In 2024, the bilateral trade volume between China and Mauritius was 1.102 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 10.1%. Among them, China's exports were 1.083 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 10.7%; Imports amounted to 19 million US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 17.3%.
3、Bilateral Exchanges In Culture, Education, Health, and Other Fields
The two governments signed a cultural cooperation agreement in 1980. In 1988, China established its first overseas Chinese cultural center in Mauritius. Mauritius is the only African country that designates the Spring Festival as a statutory holiday. In 2003, China declared Mauritius as a destination for Chinese citizens to travel abroad. In 2013, the two countries signed a comprehensive visa exemption agreement. In December 2016, the Confucius Institute at the University of Mauritius was officially unveiled.
4、Important Bilateral Agreements and Documents
In August 2013, China and Mauritius signed the Agreement between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Mauritius on Mutual Visa Exemption. The agreement came into effect on October 31, 2013.
In September 2018, China and Mauritius signed the Treaty between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Mauritius on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters and the Treaty on Extradition between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Mauritius.
In October 2019, China and Mauritius signed the Free Trade Agreement between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Mauritius. The agreement came into effect on January 1, 2021.
